Infinite Patterns

Connecting geometry, nature, and architecture

This is a new personal project that seeks to establish connections between various fields that interest me deeply: geometry, and how it appears linked to nature, on the one hand, and to art and architecture, on the other; raising relations between all of them. Somehow it would mean the fusion of the interests of two of my previous works: Nature by Numbers and Ars Qubica.

A short movie inspired by numbers, geometry, and nature

Artists and architects have used since ancient times many geometrical and mathematical properties: we could take some examples simply by observing the refined use of the proportions by architects from Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome or other Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, Da Vinci or Raphael.

But what is more surprising for me is that many of these properties and mathematical developments are also present in nature. We could find countless cases, but I wanted to refer to only three of them in this short animation: The Fibonacci Series and Spiral / The Golden and Angle Ratios / The Delaunay Triangulation, and Voronoi Tessellations.

The geometric pattern of beauty

The basic approach of Ars Qubica is to transmit the presence of geometry and mathematics in art. The figure of a cube is used as a conductive thread, a geometric figure that, when cut by a plane, can give rise to a square, an equilateral triangle, a non-regular pentagon, or a hexagon. We will also see how these sections are present in different artistic and ornamental works.

A journey of light, from distant galaxies to small drops of water

The idea of this movie came to my mind just after Nature by Numbers was finished, although it was a much more ambitious project on these days, with more scenes and greater overall complexity. I realized that it would take forever to create that project… and decided to postpone it.

But in the end, when Inspirations was finished, I recovered that idea, easing here and there, and trying to keep its essence: a look into the light from several points of view. On one side it’s a powerful radiation emitted by the most distant stars in the universe, and also by our Sun; light floods everywhere in nature, from the largest things to the smallest, creating interesting and beautiful effects; humans always used light as a symbolic and spiritual element; and it’s too an intriguing physical phenomenon deeply studied by science.

So here is the result, together with the beautiful theme “The Gift” composed by the Icelandic musician Jóhann Jóhannsson. Hope you enjoy it.
