AMLO’s Sinister Legacy

The worst legacy AMLO left to President Sheinbaum and the people of Mexico was his complicity with drug trafficking. Some might think it was a deliberate and agreed-upon policy with the leaders of crime in Mexico to win elections in exchange for allowing them to do business. Others will believe it was not a pact but the product of an ideological conception based on his love for the people, offering “hugs, not bullets”. The origin of the policy is the least important (although it is not the worst).

The effect is the same. Crime and drug trafficking have taken over significant swaths of the country, corruption has spread into every pore of officialdom, and violence has cornered, terrorized, and paralyzed the citizenry.

What is happening in Sinaloa is an exacerbated reflection of what is happening nationally. Sinaloa is the norm, not the exception. The regime, in desperation, has just changed a military secretary of Public Security in Sinaloa for another military secretary of Public Security. Why is one military officer being changed for another? Nobody explains the reasons for the removal, which unleashes understandable speculations.

Was it because the dismissed military officer was incompetent? Did he not understand the nature of the new official strategy to confront drug trafficking and violence? Or was he afraid? Or worse, did he sell out to one of the conflicting sides of drug trafficking?

At the same time, it is confirmed that drug traffickers are employing methods seen in Gaza, Israel, Lebanon, Russia, and Ukraine. Suicide drones, drones capable of firing bullets and returning to their bases, drones that launch missiles of various calibers, and spy drones have become an essential part of the arsenal of the anti-constitutional armed groups that swarm throughout the national territory, from south to north, and from east to west.

The use of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, which can slow the advance of troops deployed by the Army, the Navy, and the National Guard, is also practiced. Every day, security forces are killed and wounded.

Drug traffickers have recruited mercenaries from various countries who sell their expertise and knowledge in the art of modern warfare in exchange for high salaries. For example, Colombian mercenaries hired by the cartels in Mexico have been detected fighting in Ukraine against Russian troops. But there are also deserters from the Mexican Army who have now been hired to ambush their former comrades.

All this scenario offers only one future: more war and more and more violence. And the seed that allowed this situation to germinate with such force and extension was the complicity, acquiescence, or naivety of López Obrador. If it was complicity and acquiescence, it is tantamount to treason. If it was due to naivety, it is due to infinite stupidity combined with his deceitful personality.

It is impossible not to recognize that the situation in Mexico is approaching a low-intensity civil war. However, the features of the violence are clearly exercised with methods of terrorism.

And that fact, terrorism, brings Mexico closer to a conflict with its major partner: the United States. If Mexico lost the transgenic corn panel because it was a conflict between science and ideology, the dispute over whether or not there is terrorism in Mexico is now lost.

The explosive drones, the loss of control by the Mexican State over large swathes of the national territory, and the corruption of vast portions of the regime by drug trafficking are the sinister balance of López Obrador’s six-year term. A six-year term of death and regression in all aspects of national life. This is what this six-year term leaves us as the result of a President who should never have been President.
