A Starting Point for an Ideal Mexico

Faced with a country in growing crisis, a group of notable Mexicans joined together to call for an end to the accelerated destruction of institutions and to propose an objective image of the country they wish to pass on to new generations. Next Monday, January 30, 2023, they will present what is baptized as “A starting point”, a proclamation to all Mexicans that proposes themes and specific actions to face the severe problems that affect Mexicans today and to present a more just, democratic, egalitarian, safe and prosperous model of the country for the immediate future.

“Mexico must be an everyday feat, a necessary and committed feat; personal and collective, non-transferable and non-renounceable; a feat greater than our problems, greater than our confrontations. This feat, likewise, must be greater than the current problems: violence, insecurity, and inequality; youth torn apart by crime, drug trafficking, and drug addiction, as well as the lack of expectations and artificial and sterile polarization. Superior to the problem of marginalized and violated women in their families, in their communities, and their work; of single mothers, teenage mothers, and women, girls, and boys subjected to trafficking and sexual exploitation; of course, superior to the setbacks of the elderly, the chronically ill, people with disabilities, children with cancer and those who fall into despair, poverty and loneliness.”

The idea is to lay and define the minimum and urgent bases on which a National Project must be built, a sort of program and action plan for any candidate or aspirant to the Presidency of the Republic in 2024 who, regardless of their ideology or political affiliation, is genuinely interested in facing and solving the most urgent problems of the Republic and resuming a path of development with justice, security, equality and access to quality public services, a government plan that provides equal and accessible opportunities for any Mexican, regardless of their ideology or political affiliation, social status, gender, doctrines or creeds and that generates growth and development for the entire population; to provide a vision of the country and a specific program that seeks solutions and answers to the most urgent problems to rebuild the Republic in the face of an “omissive, authoritarian and militarizing State empowered by the authorities”.

AMLO has managed to establish “a one-man regime, where the president concentrates all power”, which has led to the “lack of governability” that exists today in the absence of certainty, autonomy, and independence of the Judiciary, while the Legislative Branch is “subjugated and abject”.

“Mexico is a feat greater than the people who are missing, displaced or in conditions of migration and who do not find justice, response or support; greater than the communities immersed in territories and economies under the control of organized crime, who are subject to abuse, dispossession, robbery, rape, subordination, bribery and extortion; greater than those who live waiting for welfare handouts or remittances. Greater than the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel who are overexploited, overexposed and over-stigmatized; greater than the children and adolescents who lose learning and are forced to drop out of school; greater than the police, journalists, and activists who suffer stigmatization, assassination attempts, and murder; greater than the mistreated and denaturalized armed forces. Greater than the public servants under harassment and being discarded, than the entrepreneurs in uncertainty, and the thousands of people subjected to official pretrial detention without clear justification, deprived of prompt and expeditious justice. Greater, of course, than the native peoples, historically discriminated against and dispossessed of their lands, cultures, languages, and resources; and greater than the very national dignity and prestige called into question in the international arena”.

The document is divided into subjects: I. A Mexico in Peace and with Development; II. Peace, Concord, and Democracy; III Equality and Quality of Life; IV Poverty and Inequality; V Prosperity; VI Marginalization and Discrimination; VII Globalization and Environment.

Epilogue: “One Mexico. Polarization must cease. Mexico must be one and plural. We call for a reunion in plurality, recognizing our different points of view, problems, and solutions, and facing the issues and challenges in peace and harmony, with the mechanisms of democracy. We want a country in concord and frank progress of which our daughters and sons will feel proud, in which they will live better than we do, in peace, with justice and well-being. We want a Mexico with hope and quality of life for all. It is our duty and our time. We invite you to a deliberation where we all have a voice, a place, and a future”.
