Google’s Artificial Intelligence model, Bard, released an update and invited some users to test its new features. So, based on the Carnegie Corporation’s concern about Political Polarization in the U.S., which is the new focus of significant research*, we asked Bard what the causes of and how to address the issue more effectively, and here is the response:
The main reasons for polarization in the US are complex and multifaceted, but some of the most important factors include:
- Economic inequality: The gap between the rich and the poor in the US has been growing for decades, and this has contributed to a sense of resentment and division among the public.
- Social and cultural differences: The US is a diverse country with a wide range of social and cultural values. These differences can lead to conflict and misunderstanding, especially when they are exploited by politicians and the media.
- The rise of social media: Social media platforms have made it easier for people to connect with others who share their views, but they have also made it easier for people to spread misinformation and echo chamber themselves.
- The decline of trust in institutions: Public trust in institutions such as the government, the media, and corporations has declined in recent years. This has made it more difficult for people to find common ground and to work together to solve problems.
- Gerrymandering and voter suppression: Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing electoral districts to favor one party over another. Voter suppression is the practice of making it more difficult for certain groups of people to vote. These practices can make it harder for people to feel like their voices are being heard, which can lead to further polarization.
There are a number of things that can be done to address polarization in the US, but it will require a concerted effort from all sectors of society. Some possible solutions include:
- Supporting policies that address economic inequality: This could include things like raising the minimum wage, investing in education and job training, and making it easier for people to start their own businesses.
- Promoting civic education and dialogue: This could involve things like teaching people about the history and government of the US, and encouraging them to talk to people with different views.

It is important to note that there is no single solution to polarization. It is a complex problem that will require a multi-pronged approach. However, by taking steps to address the underlying causes of polarization, we can begin to heal the divisions in our society and build a more united country.
In addition to the solutions listed above, here are some other things that individuals can do to help reduce polarization:
- Be mindful of the information you consume and share. Be critical of your sources and avoid spreading misinformation.
- Seek out and engage with people who have different views than you. Listen to their perspectives and try to understand where they are coming from.
- Be respectful of others, even when you disagree with them. Avoid personal attacks and name-calling.
- Be willing to compromise and find common ground. It is important to recognize that we are all Americans and that we have more in common than we think.
Reducing polarization will not be easy, but it is essential for the future of our democracy. By working together, we can build a more united and prosperous country for all.
